💧 "If stones could talk..." 155 years of the Gritschacher Inn
“Art is beautiful – but it requires a lot of work.” – Karl Valentin
That's how it works with the aa inn. Gritschacher stands there – in the church of St. Peter in Holz, between Roman history and Carinthian hospitality – and has been telling its own story for 155 years. Not loudly, not intrusively – but with heart and soul.
🏛️ Where it all began – or a little earlier
The Gritschacher House is older than any menu. Something was happening here even when the Romans were bathing. There is an old sarcophagus slab above the front door, the remains of a column next to the stairs and the step by the front door is probably made of Roman marble – with every step you take you will be creeping into history.
🍲 1870 – The birth of goulash
Michael Gritschacher was not a dreamer – he was a doer. In 1870, he not only observed the construction workers on the new Drautal Railway, but also cooked for them: a kitchen workshop , a liquor license, good soup and even better cider.
That's how it all started - with what makes a true pub: food, drink, humanity.
👩🍳 Marianne and the magic of the pasta machine
Then Marianne Gritschacher appeared. In 1910, she saw a pasta machine at her cousin's in Bad Reichenhall and thought: "I need one too!" As soon as she got home, a factory building stood opposite the inn. Gritschacher egg noodles - handmade, honest, good. It was a household name in Carinthia until the 1980s.
🧑⚖️ Politics in the drawer
Josef Gritschacher , member of the national council and co-founder of the ÖVP Carinthia , not only let the must flow here, but also held discussions with political greats such as Leopold Figl and Julius Raab . (For those who don't know them: one was the first chancellor of the Second Republic, the other the first to declare Austria sovereign again.)
🔕 Silence after that
As is often the case in life – there came a time when everything went quiet. The windows were closed, the kitchen was cold. The house stopped. But: He waited …
🧳 A Munich child and a smart chef say: "Yes"
But then a coincidence happened. Or fate. Ulla , born in Munich-Pasing , and Walter , an experienced restaurateur with a global outlook, were actually looking for a house somewhere – in Madeira, in Styria, who knows…
But this one image kept coming to mind : the Gritschacher inn.
And at some point it became clear: "The house didn't find us - it chose us."
The time was right in 2010. Since then, we've been renovating, cooking, throwing parties, laughing—and complaining a little when the internet goes crazy.
🛠️ From Sleeping Beauty to a favorite place
Today:
Four guest rooms with character (and intelligence)
Salettl from 1900 , who experienced more than many confessionals
A cuisine that moves between K&K and Slow Food
And a garden that never falls silent
🚴♀️⛳🐾 When I see it all like this...
A cyclist with a sunburn and a craving for cheese dumplings
Pilgrims are looking for more than just mobile reception
Golfers who need a beer after a birdie
Dog lovers for whom the bowl is more important than the wine list
And experts who don't ask: "Can it be faster?" - but: "Can it be better?"
💧 And me?
I am Mr. Meier . A gift for the reopening – from people who knew that the house needed a soul.
Since then, I have been lying in my sky-blue whirlpool tub , which no longer swirls, but gently splashes every day.
I watch. I listen. I save stories. And if you listen carefully, you might hear a drop that says:
"If the house could talk, this is exactly what it would say."
🎉 155 years of Gritschacher – and it's not over yet
Thank you for being here and for continuing the story with each visit.
